Why Am I Here?

Why did I choose to study on the course?

Graphic design is something I enjoy and find very interesting.
After time spent studying non creative subjects I made the decision to change direction completely and only pursue subjects that I enjoyed, graphic design is something I really enjoyed and it didn't feel like work.

A very current art form that’s developing each day.
A lot of graphic design is digital based and as we are in the digital era it is something that is evolving and a big part of today’s society.

This specific course appealed to me because of its structure and emphasis on briefs.
I felt like the approach the course takes in teaching graphic design was thorough and mimics the set-up of receiving a brief in actual employment.

I liked the building and all the facilities within.
Maybe a superficial reason but I like the design of the building but I felt that the college has really great facilities which I felt was important as how I wanted to work would never be limited.

The course is highly regarded and will leave me well prepared for future employment.
The statistics for graduates of this course are really positive and leaves me confident that I will leave the course well prepared for employment and maybe ever regarded favourably.

What's On - November.

Works to Know by Heart: An Imagined Museum.

What is it?

Featuring works from Tate Liverpool, Centre Pompidou, Tate and MMK, these three major European art musesums are bringing together over 60 major works, from post 1945. The exhibiton will include works from artists such as  Marcel Duchamp, Claes Oldenburg, Bridget Riley, Dorothea Tanning, Andy Warhol, Rachel Whiteread.

The exhibiton invites  the audience into a fictional scenario in which the works within the exhibiton will be destroyed and cease to exist forever. Works to know by heart asks vitsitors to memories the works they believe should be saved by memorising them in order to secure their future preservation.

The idea behind the exhibition is based on a novel by  Ray Bradbury  called Fahrenheit 451 which is set in a modern society where all literature is banned and the only way to preserve them is to learn them by heart.

What to expect?

The exhibition will come to an end with an exciting final weekend. All of the artworks will ‘disappear’, leaving the gallery to be replaced by members of the public who will recreate the missing art works to become a ‘living museum’.

Expect to enjoy an array of multi-art form, live performances. Works to Know by Heart, encourages the audiences to take an active role in the exhibition and to form a personal relationship with the artworks on display in order to become the 'living museum'.

When?

20 November 201514 February 2016

Where?

Tate Liverpool

How to get there?

From leeds, train or coach, then either a bus/taxi/walk to albert dock.

Inspiration

Inspiration.

In our session today we were discussing where we get our inspiration from and how we can go about finding new sources of inspiration. The class was split into groups and we each wrote down sources our own sources of inspiration and when they were put together with the rest of the classes, we were left with a huge collection of design blogs, websites etc. The ten I picked are mostly blogs i had never heard of before and wanted to check out, mixed with a few of my favourites.

One minute briefs

One minute briefs is a project set up to promote brands and causes in the form of quick briefs in which they challenge their viewers and the creative community to tackle the brief in one minute. I think the best thing about this concept is it makes creativity accessible to all people as the design process is limited to one minute and it allows people to engage themselves in a short burst of creativity no matter how busy they are. However there is a more tangible incentive in the form of a reward the most successful submission is given a prize.

Sometimes when you are given too long to answer a brief it can stifle the creative process and in the end, over thinking can cause you to lose sight of the core values and messages, as a designer, we are aiming to get across to out audience. This idea is demonstrated by an info-graphic that, to me at least, is incredibly accurate…

Miley Cyrus - Tongue tied by Quentin Jones

This is a two-minute video directed by mixed media artist and film-maker. The video contains Miley Cyrus herself poking fun at the comments made at her incessant use of tongue pulling. The full write up on newness.com notes how Miley Cyrus is what people would call a “former Disney kid” but the idea of this film is to say she is that she is a forever Disney kid because her cartoonish persona and her position as a sex symbol perfectly embodies what Walt Disney created when he collaborated with Salvador Dali  which is ‘phantasmagorical dreams of goofy innocence and erotically charged surrealism”

People of Print

People of print ‘acts as a daily source of inspiration” where they share “all things print related, both creatively and industriously”

I have a real interest in screen printing and using this method in alternate ways and playing with the translucency of the ink to create interesting and unpredictable outcomes

I followed them on Instagram and straight away a post by the People of Print caught my eye and I was introduced to a London based experimental printmaking studio called Heretic Print Studio and all of their prints and processes are things that I want to try for myself.

Instagram

For the above reason, i decided to include instagram. This isn't a new source of inspiration to me but it is one i use on a daily basis. After doing this research i started to follow design blogs and in return i have been followed by design blogs which is just increasing my sources of creative inspiration.

Design Milk

Design milk is an online magazine that’s focus is modern design within art, architecture, interior design, furniture and décor, fashion and technology.  As one of my interests in minimalism and modern design this would be a good place to go for inspiration and the fact it’s divided in to specific areas helps narrow down the search. Also there is a feature called “skim milk” which is posted every Thursday, which seeks out the best it minimal design.

I-D magazine
Features people from all creative fields and prides itself on scouting fresh talent so would be a good source of very new and upcoming creatives.
I like the fact they have their top post within each sector as one of the first things you see and have avoided the traditional list view which I find can be tiring to look through

Ffffound.com
This is one of my favourite sites and i use it get inspiration quite often as they have a very vast collection of images. My favourite part about this site as its not just a collection of artistic images, it is images of absolutely everything. When you click on one image, underneath the image it has a collection of related images and then a collection of posts by users who liked the same image, allowing you to build up a collection of images very quickly. One of my favourite pieces i found on this site is a piece by Ramon Todo

Style noir
A site dedicated to dark fashion and culture,  I think it's good to get an alternative to the popular light and airy modernist/minimalist scene at the moment

Sight unseen

"the site has served as a destination for companies and individuals interested in scouting new talent as well as an inspiration for those working in creative pursuits." The first thing i notices about this blog when scrolling through is a lot of their posts are featuring a lot of colourful work, something that can be absent from a lot of modern design blogs. One post that I particularly likes was a feature on the Dogs of artists and it was a short conversation with artist about why their dog is a hero to them and it was interesting to hear about the artists in a way that is unrelated to their actual practice and work.

Tumblr

This is one of my favourite sites to visit because its mainly images and not text heavy at all, your feed is completely personal based on the people you follow and is something that i look at to get away from my work. Through the ability to create text post you can get a commentary on current events and important social issues from people who are experiencing it in a different way to you and that is away from perhaps the bias of news companies which i think is sometimes very interesting. The fact that it is a website that is completely informal means that people generally tend to speak their mind very openly and honestly leading to discussions that can be very interesting to read. aside from that there is a huge collection of artists and photographers posts that are easily bookmarked or to be used as inspiration. One of my favourite artists was found through tumblr and since then I have found many more.

Brian Eno - John Peel Lectures Radio 6

John Peel Lecture – 2015 with Brian Eno

One of my favourite pieces of music is called “An Ending” by Brain Eno. As I am already a fan of his musical work I was really interested to see what he was going to talk about.

In this lecture Brian Eno talks about how we should view art as everything that is not essential to living or as he puts it “art is everything you don’t have to do” everything we do from cooking to moving is now done with some sort of embellishment that has transformed it into an art. For example, baking is no longer an essential part of life and it has developed into cake decorating and intricate pastries, wearing clothes to keep us warm has developed into a statement of our personality. Eno stresses the importance of this in our society referencing Charles dickens and when he wrote about poverty. This was especially important at this time as there was a huge class divide and this book helped those who were upper class see what was happening around them and the effect of their ignorance towards the poor, helping towards a more cohesive society. This still applies today, art, in every from is a way of communication across the world allowing us to see how other people think and feel and give us an insight into their experiences.
