Brian Eno - John Peel Lectures Radio 6

John Peel Lecture – 2015 with Brian Eno

One of my favourite pieces of music is called “An Ending” by Brain Eno. As I am already a fan of his musical work I was really interested to see what he was going to talk about.

In this lecture Brian Eno talks about how we should view art as everything that is not essential to living or as he puts it “art is everything you don’t have to do” everything we do from cooking to moving is now done with some sort of embellishment that has transformed it into an art. For example, baking is no longer an essential part of life and it has developed into cake decorating and intricate pastries, wearing clothes to keep us warm has developed into a statement of our personality. Eno stresses the importance of this in our society referencing Charles dickens and when he wrote about poverty. This was especially important at this time as there was a huge class divide and this book helped those who were upper class see what was happening around them and the effect of their ignorance towards the poor, helping towards a more cohesive society. This still applies today, art, in every from is a way of communication across the world allowing us to see how other people think and feel and give us an insight into their experiences.
